| Muzak - Studies have shown that music when played at the right volume and manner improves productivity and efficiency levels in an organization. This is more of a science and involves exploiting the physiological and psychological effects of music on the human body. It is this science that’s also known as Muzak.
Interestingly this term is not just about background scores to raise efficiency levels. It is also the name of a famous American corporation. Muzak employs a technique called ‘stimulus progression’ which is a way to lift the psychological state of a person’s mind. They achieve this by programming sound in 15 minute intervals which in turn leads to forward thinking and movement. In short, their music claims to get more done faster. Muzak uses variations in tempo, instruments, orchestration and rhythm etc. Finally at the end of every heightened music tune, there is a gap of 15 minutes of silence. This tends to alert employees and prevents the music from becoming a distraction – which sometimes does happen when listening to music for extended periods of time.
Muzak isn’t just about music running in the background. It represents music as something real. It is free from the typical editing and polishing that happens in traditional music scores. Instead it is as free and fresh as untamed animals in the jungle! Their music has been proven to increase the metabolic rate of working, sometimes increasing and reducing muscular energies in an individual and even causing heightened spans of attention or even fatigue levels. There’s no doubt that our bodies function as a holistic combination of electrical frequencies, rhythms and pulse rates – and Muzak just proves that the human mind and body can respond to music in whichever way the music orients it. |
